Insurance Tip of The Week
SCHOOL IS OPEN - DRIVE CAREFULLY
It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus when the large red lights located on the top of the bus are flashing or when the bus extends their stop signal arm. This includes buses that are in parking lots, on school grounds, or in front of school entrances.
Passing a stopped school bus could result in a fine. The minimum fine in New York State for a first conviction is $250.00, but could be as much as $400.00 and possibly up to 30 days of imprisonment. The only exception to this law is if the bus driver or a police officer signals that you may pass.
Passing a stopped school bus is a major motor vehicle violation.
To avoid hitting a child or receiving a ticket here are some quick tips to remember:
- You must stop for a school bus even if it is on the opposite side of a divided highway.
- School buses stop for ALL railroad crossings. If you are behind a school bus and you are approaching a railroad crossing, be prepared to stop when the school bus stops.
- Slow down when the bus driver activates the flashing yellow lights.
- Never pass on the right side of the bus, where children enter or exit. This is illegal.
- Do not pass a school bus until the red lights and signals are turned off.
- Obey school zone speed limit signs.
